Sportsmen's Chalet
About This Spot
From the moment you pull up to Sportsmen’s Chalet, there’s a quiet ease that settles in. Nestled along Old Hwy 70 near the gentle curves of Dead Horse Bend, this tucked-away bar carries the spirit of the Northwoods with a pace that’s both unhurried and welcoming. Inside, the wood-paneled walls and soft lighting wrap you in a warm embrace, inviting you to linger a little longer, whether it’s a midweek evening or a lively Sunday gathering.
This is a place where time feels grounded in tradition and familiarity, yet always open to new memories. The owners and staff carry a genuine warmth, greeting returning faces like old friends and making newcomers feel immediately at home. Conversations ebb and flow naturally here — the kind that sparks in cozy nooks or around well-worn tables, sometimes accompanied by laughter that fills the room without ever feeling forced.
Food and drink at Sportsmen’s Chalet are part of the story rather than its sole focus. The menu brings nods to the lake and forest that surround you: lightly battered lake perch, perfectly fried and paired with sides like house-made German potato salad, tell of a kitchen rooted in local ingredients and care. There’s something quietly comforting in the way these familiar flavors arrive — straightforward but thoughtfully prepared, like a well-loved recipe passed down through generations.
Whether you’re slipping in after a day outdoors or settling in for a slow evening, the atmosphere here is one of ease and genuine connection. It’s a spot where the day’s pace slows down just enough to savor not only the food and drinks, but the company and the shared sense of place. Sportsmen’s Chalet isn’t just a bar; it’s a pause, a gathering, and a quietly joyful discovery in the heart of Eagle River.

We have a hard time finding a good fresh lake perch meal and the Sportsmen's Chalet was a wonderful find! The perch are the nice small ones, the batter is nice and light and they are fried perfectly. The homemade soup and pie were also very good! The atmosphere is warm and inviting and the staff is so friendly! We definitely plan on going back and would recommend it to all.

I've been coming here for years. Amazing fish fry and the German potato salad is a must have. The owners are so great always remember me when I come in sometimes it can be months before a get back up north. Always one of my dinner destinations when I'm up there I've of the best in the St.germain area. Kelly Nye Hoffman

Sportsmen’s Chalet is an amazing dinner spot between Eagle River and St. Germain. It is located on Dead Horse Bend. I’ve been coming to this place with my family for at least 25 years. Friendly and amazing service is always provided by the owners. The fish fry is always amazing. Some of the best Walleye filets you will find in the Northwoods are right here. You can also opt for lake perch, haddock or Alaskan whitefish. No matter what the soup is, it will be delicious. There is no shortage of fish or atmosphere and it’s one of my absolute favorite places to go. I hope you like taxidermy because there is plenty of it all over the walls. Don’t forget to ask the owner to throw a dollar on the ceiling

This place is an amazing little spot. Good chilli. Everyone is so friendly and we all had so many laughs. This place is as good in the winter as it is in the summer. Visit on Sundays for EXTRA fun. Trust me.

I love this place. What a great local pub and grub. Their nightly specials are great. Nice selection of tap beer that is draft beer for those of you south of the 45th. Friendly service. Always a great meal or sandwich. Limited menu but everything is great. I cannot recommend this place highly enough. Gary is a great bartender. Their Chicken poop bingo is really fun. They have great pies and jams to take home.

You have to experience Chicken Sh*t Bingo at least once! They make batches of syrup in the spring that you can purchase. The owner is a very talented wood carver and those pieces are also displayed. Very friendly local crowd!
